Jessica Lohr | Season in Review

One of our Ballet 5:8 traditions at the end of each performance season is to ask the artists of the company to share some reflections with us. A special thank you to the artists of the company for sharing about their experiences in the 2021/22 Season.

Q. Pick one word to describe the 2021/22 Season. Why?

A. I would say diverse. We performed so many unique works that held such beautiful meaning. From Reckless to Golden Sessions, we were able to share many important stories as well as meaningful ideas and thoughts with our audiences.

Q. Can you share a favorite moment from on- or off-stage?

A. The last performance of the season was incredibly special to me. Knowing that my family and a few very dear friends were there to watch my final performance with Ballet 5:8 was such a gift. I also so enjoyed all the moments I had with the other dancers that day. There were so many hugs, kind words, and fist bumps in the wings and I could not stop smiling! The dancers at Ballet 5:8 are incredible both in their talents and in their kindness and support. Performing Philia from Golden Sessions in Grand Rapids was another favorite onstage moment of mine! I felt such joy and freedom and it was also very special returning to a familiar theater.

Q. You performed many works this season! Does one stand out as the most meaningful or most notable for you personally? Why?

A. Gospel Impressions (by Julianna Rubio Slager) was such an honor to be a part of. Everything from the music, to the costumes, to the choreography, exuded such beauty and maturity. Time felt like it stood still while dancing that piece. I, along with three other dancers, represented the Word from the first chapter of the Gospel of John. Our sections were inspired by the mystery of Christ and I loved the nuance and artistry that could stem from that concept. A favorite ballet of mine for sure!

Q. What or who has inspired you this season?

A.  I was incredibly inspired by my teammates in the company this season. The beauty and resilience they brought to every rehearsal, the joy and excitement in every performance, and the Jesus-like kindness and servanthood they offered again and again stood out to me more strongly than ever.
