Building Dreams: Why We Rely on Donors to Support Ballet 5:8’s Second Company

At Ballet 5:8, our mission extends far beyond creating breathtaking performances. We are committed to shaping a ballet company that not only reaches the pinnacle of artistic excellence but also reflects the values of our faith. Central to this vision is the belief that every aspiring dancer—regardless of race, body type, or economic background—deserves access to exceptional training and the opportunity to succeed.

This belief is the foundation of everything we do. It drives our decisions and fuels our aspirations. Yet, achieving this mission requires more than dedication and passion—it demands resources.

The Resource-Intensive Nature of Ballet

Ballet is one of the most resource-intensive art forms. Each aspect of a dancer’s training and performance requires significant investment:

  • In-person training from highly experienced teachers.

  • Specialized spaces equipped with sprung floors, barres, and mirrors.

  • Essential equipment like pointe shoes, costumes, and rehearsal apparel.

  • State-of-the-art performance venues with lighting and technical capabilities.

  • Rigorous time commitments, with dancers training upwards of 20 hours each week.

Historically, these resources have made ballet an art form largely accessible only to the upper class. We want to change that. We want ballet to be an art form that reflects the diversity of our community and is accessible to all who are willing to work for it.

But we can’t do it alone.

Elevating the Second Company

The Second Company at Ballet 5:8 is a pivotal step for dancers transitioning into professional careers. These emerging artists dedicate over 40 hours a week to rigorous training and performing, honing their skills and artistry in preparation for a full-time ballet contract.

Until this year, participation in the Second Company came with a significant financial barrier: tuition. While necessary to cover costs, this requirement placed an enormous burden on dancers. Many were forced to take on additional jobs to pay for their training, leading to burnout and stifling their potential to thrive in this demanding field.

This year, in a step of faith and alignment with our mission, we made a bold decision: the Second Company no longer requires tuition.

This change removes a critical barrier and ensures that every dancer has the opportunity to excel without the weight of financial strain. But it also means that we are relying more than ever on the generosity of our supporters to make this vision sustainable.
